A Prayer on Gentle Care – January 16, 2010

January 16, 2010

Dear Family and Friends,

Please take a moment to pray with us.

We have not spoken to our two seven-year-olds about Sue’s diagnosis with cancer.  We didn’t want to put them through needless worry, especially when she hasn’t yet started her treatment.  Still, we believe that they are intuitive, and understand something is wrong on some other level beyond words.

This morning Joy sat down at the kitchen table while she was praying and writing in her journal.  Joy drew some pictures on a paper, showed them to Sue, and interpreted them.  On the first drawing, she had made a large heart on its side.  Above it was a star, with lines connecting the star with the heart.  “The start means you’re awesome, and the heart means ‘I love you’.  This is Joy all around you.”  In the second drawing, she placed a heart in the middle of the page.  A star was drawn to its right with one of its points touching the heart.  A cross was drawn to the lower left of the heart.  Out of it grew a flower.  Joy said, “there are things around you and another special thing which is dying.  It is around you and on you, and that is the cross.  I am saying that I don’t want you to die, because you are so loveable.”  When she spoke these words, she didn’t pronounce them in a conversational tone.  It was as if she was listening and speaking words that she had heard.  It was a special moment for Sue.  She has felt that we have been under attack, and this felt like a message that God is taking care of us.

A Prayer on Gentle Care

O Most loving Creator.
We give You thanks for messages of hope,
That find their ways to our hearts,
Not though roaring thunder,
Crashing ocean waves,
Earthquakes tumbling mountain tops,
But in the quiet whispers and drawings
Of a simple child.
It is fitting that words of love
Come to us through an innocent messenger.
Let me always be thankful,
For Your gentle care,
Lovingly embracing us
Like a mother caressing her infant.
For while the tumultuous displays of Your power awe us,
Your tiniest whispers
Softly touch our souls,
Reminding us that we are never alone.
You are with us,
In the midst of our oppression,
Defending and protecting us from evil.
In Jesus’ name.

We are just trying to live through this, one day at a time. We are thankful for the love and support of family and friends.
